Carolyn A. Viergutz (nee Kort), 90, of Germantown, WI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 surrounded by her daughters.
Born in Rothschild, WI on February 25th, 1936 to Frank and Anna (Langhoff) Kort, Carolyn attended Trinity Lutheran for grade school and was a member of the first graduating class of D.C. Everest High School in 1954. On June 28, 1958 she married Glen Viergutz and they were blessed to spend 61 years together before Glen's passing in 2019.
Carolyn worked several years at Zimpro as a chemist, then took time to be a stay at home mom to her daughters. She returned to work in the late 1970's, working at JCPenney in the office for many years until she decided to retire to have more time to do the things she enjoyed which included reading, playing cards with friends, traveling with Glen, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was always willing to take a day trip to the casino or to play bingo and to meet with one of their many friend groups for breakfast or lunch. In 2018 she moved from Wausau to be closer to family and since 2021 has lived at Fairway Knoll Retirement Community where she has enjoyed making new friends playing some of her favorite games, trivia and password. She was always thankful for the sense of community and the support other residents provided as her eyesight deteriorated from AMD.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter Brenda (Keith) Schreiber, her daughter Sara (Allen) Schmidt and her grandchildren Derek (Aubrey Campbell), Travis (Ashlyn Pagel), and Kendra Schmidt. She is further survived by her sisters Patricia Ringle and Marlene Opichka, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her parents Frank and Anna Kort, Father-in-law Raymond Viergutz, Mother-in-law Anna (Gruetzmacher) Viergutz, and in-laws Robert Ringle, Glen Opichka, John Viergutz, Harold Viergutz, Wallace & Esther Viergutz, Sarah & Earl Thompson, Mabel & Otto Gresen, Dale & Audrey Viergutz, Les & Delores Viergutz, and Grace & Al Halliday.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026 at St John Immanuel Lutheran Church, 5304 44th Ave., Wausau, WI 54401, starting at 9:30am until her service at 10:30am.
Memorials can be made to the Marathon County Humane Society, Lutheran Church of the Living Christ (her church in Germantown), or to St. Johns Immanuel Church (Wausau).
