David Marlin Smith, 84, died on Sunday, October 5th at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born October 28,1940 in Burlington, WI to the late Rev. Marlin E. Smith and Murlen Nelson Smith.
Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverley of Wausau, his son Jeffrey Smith (Robin Smith) Whitefish, MT and Crane Lake, MN, daughter Stephany Herrmann (Jason Banks), Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren Erik and Ingrid Smith, St. Louis Park, MN, Lauren Herrmann (fiancé Drew Hanson) Maple Grove, MN, Henry Banks, Minneapolis, MN; step-granddaughters Bethany Lovell (Jason) and Jessie Lovell (Shiv) Denver, CO and step great-granddaughter, Jaime Klein. Dave is further survived by his brother William Smith, MD (Nan), Mequon, WI and James Smith (Anne) Evanston, IL.
David graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School. He began his career with Wausau Insurance Companies in the Chicago area, initially working as a claims adjuster before transitioning into trial work. In 1979, David relocated with his family to Wausau, Wisconsin-the company's home office-where he continued his work in the claims and legal department as Assistant Vice President of Claims. Following Wausau Insurance Companies' separation from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company in 1999, David joined the Nationwide Enterprise in Wausau as Vice President of Specialty Claims, Nationwide Indemnity.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled later per Dave's request.
