Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Elisabeth Ehrhardt Atwell on August 25, 2026 at her home in Wausau, Wisconsin at the age of 94.

Elisabeth was born on September 27, 1931 in Albert Lea, MN, the third child of Louis and Elisabeth Ehrhardt. One of her earliest memories was riding to school across the frozen lake in Albert Lea in a horse drawn sleigh. The world and technology changed considerably in her 94 years, and she was often an early adopter, enjoying the challenge of learning new things. She was one of the first women to attend law school in her early 40's and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic in her 60's. Elisabeth had a lasting impact on the people she encountered, looking past outward appearances to the spirit within.

As the daughter of a family of nursery and seedsmen, she could be found gardening up to the final day of her life. She was deeply spiritual, faithfully attending church in all of the communities where she lived. Ever curious, she loved birds, travel, music and art, singing in the church choir and playing the piano. She lived and worked in Ferryville, Wisconsin for more than 30 years and always said that her heart was there, in the coulee region. Elisabeth loved poetry, and took to heart Robert Frost's message in "The Road Not Taken", often taking the path less traveled. It made all of the difference.

Elisabeth is survived by her five children (Mary, Bob, John, Nancy and Carl), 22 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren (with more on the way), 8 nieces and nephews and their many spouses and partners. Her parents, sister and brother predeceased Elisabeth.

A memorial service and Mass will be held in the fall, details to be announced at a later date. For those wishing to make a donation in her memory, please donate to either of the organizations below:
