Howard E. Drebenstedt

Howard E. Drebenstedt, 85, of Merrill, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 18, 2025.

Howard was born on June 2, 1940, in Lebanon Township to Carl and Edna (Nass) Drebenstedt. He graduated from Oconomowoc High School and dedicated his career as a counselor for the State of Wisconsin. His empathy and understanding greatly impacted the lives of those he served. In his younger days, Howard enjoyed playing baseball and softball. He also enjoyed bowling- something he continued to do well into his 70’s. On September 2, 1967, he married Sandy Jo Hellrud at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashippun, WI. After Sandy’s passing, the grief group he joined became a great blessing and a big part of his life. A devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Howard found solace and strength in his faith, and he cherished the fellowship of his church community. He was an active member of AFSCME Retirees for 35 years and was a long-term treasurer. In addition to his professional commitments, Howard had a passion for collecting stamps and playing dartball, pursuits that filled his life with joy and connection to friends and family.

Survivors include his two sons, Monte and John Drebenstedt; grandson, Ben Drebenstedt; brothers, Ken and Vern Drebenstedt; and niece, Christine (Evaristo Rodriguez Sanchez) Walker; as well as many extended family and friends.

Howard is preceded in death by his wife, Sandy Jo Drebenstedt; parents, Carl and Edna Drebenstedt; and brothers, Carl, Dennis and Robert Drebenstedt.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 930 Edgewood Road, Wausau. Rev. Natalie Bassett will be officiating. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am until the time of service at the church on Friday. Private family inurnment will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
