Howard "Howie" E. Pries

May 23, 1936 — August 18, 2025

Wausau

Howard Erwin Pries, affectionately known as Howie, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by the love of his family in Weston, Wisconsin. Born in Milwaukee on May 23, 1936, Howie lived a life marked by devotion—to his family, his faith, his work, and his community.

🎓 Howie graduated from West Milwaukee High School in 1954, where he met the love of his life, Nancy Plutschack. Their bond was immediate and enduring, leading to a beautiful marriage on October 19, 1957. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, warmth, and unwavering support, beginning in their first home fondly known as the “Little House on the Alley.”

🛠️ After high school, Howie worked for several local companies and served honorably in the Air Guard Reserves. His career journey led him to the Germantown School District , and later to Zimpro in Wausau, where his expertise in boilers and steam power flourished. In true entrepreneurial spirit, he founded Pries Boiler and Burner, serving clients across the Midwest with dedication and skill—often alongside his dear friend Gib Moran—until his retirement.

🙏 Faith was a cornerstone of Howie’s life. He was deeply involved in church life, singing in the choir, mentoring youth, supporting family ministries, and welcoming congregants as an usher and greeter. He even rang the church bell, calling the community to worship. His commitment extended to the Interfaith Campers, where he found joy and spiritual connection in monthly camping trips that celebrated unity across faiths.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Together, Howie and Nancy raised three children—Betty, Bonnie, and Michael—in a home overflowing with love, laughter, and wisdom. Howie was a cherished figure not only to his own children but to their friends as well, offering guidance, humor, and a welcoming space for post-game gatherings and heartfelt conversations.

🎉 Howie’s zest for life was contagious. He found joy in softball, horseshoes, and card games—especially Sheepshead. He and Nancy were regulars at card club nights, where his quick wit, hearty laugh, and signature “Howie-isms” lit up the room. His sayings, full of humor and insight, will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Summers in St. Germain were his favorite—camping at Lynn Ann’s, fishing, and making memories with his grandkids.

💞 Howie is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nancy; daughters Betty Rasmussen (Douglas) and Bonnie Surkin (Barry); son Michael Pries (Maryrose); grandchildren Claire Chamberlain, Michael Surkin (Chelsea), Jason Surkin (Kenzi), Cooper Pries, and Johnny Pries; and great-granddaughter Margot Surkin. His legacy of love and laughter continues through each of them.
