James "Jim" Kernosky 99, passed away in Wausau, Wisconsin on February 26, 2026, at Aspirus Hospice House. Jim was born on December 30, 1926, in Grayling, Michigan to Joseph and Marie (Endricks) Kiersnowski. Jim attended Grayling High School and dropped out at the age of 17 to serve his county in the US Army during World War II, serving with the US Army in the 97th Infantry Division as a Private First Class. He took great pride his military service. After working several jobs in the Detroit area auto industry, Jim decided to finish his high school education and enrolled in Michigan State where he completed an accounting degree. He was employed for 25 years as a field auditor for Wausau Insurance. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Kinzie & Green for 25 years.
Jim married his wife Marilyn (Rock) in 1962 and together they lovingly raised twin boys, Peter and Paul and a daughter, Ann in the Riverview neighborhood of Wausau. Jim was a long-time member of the YMCA and enjoyed running. At the age of 58 he decided to try lap swimming. He swam a mile most days up until his 90th birthday. Jim also loved spending winters at his condo in Peoria, Arizona and continued to spend time there through the age of 97 when the trips became difficult for him. With the help of his son Pete, he was able to live very independently up until a week before his 99th birthday.
Jim had a huge heart and the ability to form an instant connection with almost everyone he met, and he became a good friend to many. His sharp mind, playful attitude, sense of humor, and love of life stayed with him up until his time of passing. Jim enjoyed watching all sports and reading; he particularly enjoyed World War II History and John Grisham novels.
His love and heart live on through his daughter Ann Schwieger (Ted), seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his wife Marilyn (2014) and his sons Paul (2017) and Pete (2025). A gathering of immediate family was held on February 28, 2026, at Brainard Funeral home to say goodbye to the greatest man we've ever known.
