Robert Duane Weir

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Robert (Bob)Duane Weir, 92, on July 31, 2026.

Bob was born on October 20, 1933 in Grand Forks, ND to parents Walter and Mary (Sabe) Weir.

He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in May 1951.

Bob met his future wife Patricia on a train trip to Minneapolis, MN to attend a hockey game between the UND Fighting Sioux and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They were married on June 6,1955 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, St. Thomas, ND. After more than 70 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in September 2025.

He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science, Literature and Arts degree from the University of North Dakota (UND) on Feb. 2, 1957.

Bob served in the United States Army from April 1957 to April 1959, where he was stationed as a Specialist 4 clerk typist at Fort Hood, Texas in the 2nd Missile Battalion of the 77th Artillery. His group guarded the "Honest John" missile there.

He went back to UND and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education on June 4,1961 and followed that up with a Masters degree in Education on Aug. 14, 1965.

Bob was recruited to Wausau as a political science teacher at John Muir Middle School. He spent his entire 30-plus-year career there, moving up to become an Assistant Principal, Principal and Administrator there. Under his leadership, the school earned the National Education Association Exemplary Middle School Award in 1984. The award called John Muir "A Panorama of Excellence."

Bob was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather (Papa). His family always came first and he was happiest when surrounded by them.

After his retirement, he and Pat provided loving and nurturing daycare to their grandchildren Hannah and Stephen. They also spent a few Februarys in Bradenton, FL enjoying beach walks and warmer temperatures.

Bob was an avid Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers and University of Wisconsin fan. He also enjoyed watching the Little League World Series each August.

He is survived by daughter Debra (Jay) Lillge and son David (Stephanie) Weir, grandchildren, Hannah Swope (Ryan) and Stephen (Breanna) Weir and great granddaughters Hadley Swope and Rylie Weir.

Bob is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William and sisters, Laura Branvold, Edna Berger, Welda Weir, Beverly Shroyer and Virginia Bruski.

At Bob's request, services are being held privately.
